No Better Time for the "Bye" Week

The "bye" week couldn't come at a better time for me since it's allowing me to "catch up" on my blog!! While everyone else is trying to conjour up ideas to fill in the "off time," I'm getting to go over what I've missed (and a recap for you that won't feel too much like the re-run of Spring Break on MTV that you just can't stand by the 3rd time around).

But most imortantly, it's coming at a great time for the Steelers. They seem to be undergoing major adversity with all of their injuries and 1 battered QB that can use the time to work through his bumps and bruises.

This is just a short introduction of what I hope to cover today and throughout the week until the next game on the 19th against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Big Ben Back at Practice

Despite the fact that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin reported at his press conference on Tuesday that QB Ben Roethlisberger was expected to be limited at practice, he took part in the team’s full practice yesterday.

Roethlisberger's shoulder injury continues to be a small issue but it's much better than it was a week ago.

“I feel better,” said Roethlisberger. “Obviously it’s sore. Who in here isn’t sore who plays this game? But, it’s definitely better and we’re making progress.”

“On Thursday, I took all the snaps and instead of throwing I just went through all the motions and pointed to the guy I would have thrown to,” said Roethlisberger. “It’s a way to the play, as coach said, in the helmet and it’s good to be mentally in there.”

Yesterday, much of the news media was focused on Ben's shoulder wanting to clear up the confusion (they should've just visited my blog!), but Roethlisberger was not particularly open to discussing the matter saying that "it's still attached" and not worth discussing further.

It was also one of the discussions last night on the Subway Nightly Sports Call between Bob Pompiani and Bob Smizak. When Pompiani asked where he thought the confusion was coming from, Smizak was certain that Roethlisberger had everything to do with it (i.e., he was the one who reported that his shoulder was separated to NBC and whoever else would listen). Whatever, if he gets the job done - WHO CARES?! So what if he seeks a little attention (perhaps wanting to make himself look like a better QB playing "hurt") - let's face it, he's a "high maintanence" QB - maybe it's because of his young age and something he'll "outgrow," but he get's the job done and I think we've given him enough time talking about his latest injury; let's move on!

You Say "Sprained" and I Say "Separated"

The debate continues regarding quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's shoulder. Although only a few minutes were dedicated to talking about it during Coach Tomlin's press conference yesterday, it's still as clear as it was the day before - clear as mud!

As previously posted, Tomlin reported that Roethlisberger has a sore shoulder ("sprain") and he is unaware as to who told the media (specifically NBC sportscasters) that his shoulder was separated.

Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that an AC sprain is a slight separation as pointed out by Jory Rand last night on KDKA-TV news. He was the first one to actually look into the medical terminology (although I don't remember which medical source he referenced). I took his lead and "googled" "shoulder AC sprain" and most of which gave short descriptions including "sprain / separation" in the explanation, so I just picked the University Sports Medicine site.

This site explains that there are different grades of sprains (but the description involves some type of separation). Here's the part of the description that would best narrow in on our area of confusion (taken directly from the source):

Shoulder separations, or sprains, are graded I, II, or III depending on how far the collarbone is separated from the shoulder

A Grade I sprain has tenderness but no actual separation
A Grade II sprain has slight separation of the clavicle from the shoulder
A Grade III sprain has even more separation

Roethlisberger Still Feeling the Effects

Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger's shoulder is still sore from a hit he took during the game against the Houston Texans.

“Hopefully he will progress like he did last week,” said Tomlin. “I met with him and he said he feels better this week than he did a week ago, which is good.”

Unlike previous speculation that was reported during last Sunday night's game coverage, Roethlisberger’s shoulder was not separated. The injury is classified as an AC sprain and when asked about the false report, Tomlin responded that he had no idea and that the information did not come from him or Steelers medical staff.

Tomlin added that Roethlisberger will be limited in practice, but it's not something to be concerned about.

“Some guys require a great number of snaps to be prepared to play, some guys can learn visually in the film room and some need physical reps,” said Tomlin. "Thankfully with Ben he is a quick study and sharp guy. He can learn in a variety of ways, film study, visual reps and so forth. It doesn’t take him a great deal of reps to be ready to play, at least in my experience.

“I thought he played pretty well the other night. Hopefully it won’t be an issue if he is limited this week. I know it won’t be an excuse.”

Keisel "Week-to-Week" with Calf Sprain

During his weekly press conference, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin reported that they will be without defensive end Brett Keisel on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Keisel left the 1st quarter of last Sunday night's game against the Cleveland Browns due to a calf strain and his status is week-to-week.

Coach Tomlin did not announce a replacement player, but indicated it won't be just a single player to fill the spot. Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason, and Orpheus Roye are all expected to play.

“We followed the rotation principle at the defensive line,” said Tomlin. “We have suited six guys and played six. Now is an opportunity for Orpheus Roye to step up into the rotation. It won’t be one guy; it will be a collection of guys that get an opportunity to play in his spot. As always our standard of expectation won’t change. We expect those guys to play and play at a high level.”

Other noteable injuries:

Donovan Woods, rookie linebacker - hamstring injury (will not play Sunday)
Deshea Townsend, cornerback - heel contusion (day-to-day, but Tomlin is hopeful he will practice on Wednesday)
William Gay, safety - ankle sprain (limited in practice)
Santonio Holmes, wide receiver - knee bruise (limited in practice)
Travis Kirschke, defensive end - back (limited in practice)

“All of those guys are not in question for the game, just limited for the first part of the week,” said Tomlin. “All in all, considering how physical that game was, not a bad laundry list of injuries.”

Parker Nominated for Another NFL Weekly Honor

Keisel OUT for 2 Months

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel was injured in the first quarter of Sunday night's game against Cleveland. Keisel injured his right calf and returned to the sideline sporting crutches and a protective boot from his knee to his foot.

Kiesel is scheduled to undergo further tests on his calf this week and will be out for approximately 2 months. This is going to be a big loss for the Steelers.

Also big news is Big Ben's "sore" shoulder.

NBC-TV reported Sunday night that Roethlisberger has a separated shoulder, described merely as "sore" by coach Mike Tomlin a week ago. Indeed,
Roethlisberger has a low-grade separation but it did not prevent him from throwing 19 times, including one pass of at least 60 yards and another of 50 in a swirling wind in Cleveland.

A Steelers spokesperson said that there won't be any updates on either of these injuries until Coach Mike Tomlin's press conference today.

Mendenhall is Already a "CHAMPION"

THANKS to PSaMP for pointing out that Rashard Mendenhall signed a three-year deal with Champion Athletic Apparel. A rookie and he already has endorsement deals (sweet)!! Mendenhall is the first professional athlete to sign with the company in over ten years (even sweeter)!!

From what PSaMP says, this news has been out for awhile, but as always, I'm late in finding out (so I'm passing it on to you hoping it news to you too)!!

Steelers Win 10 - 6 Over Browns

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue their reign over the Cleveland Browns (with this being the 10th straight win against the rivals) and are now 2-0 for this season. Despite a shoulder injury, Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger looked good.

Prior to the game, NBC's Al Michaels made reference to Roethlisberger's injury and mentioned that he had separated his shoulder during the season-opener against the Houston Texans. The Steelers never released this information and never eluded to the fact that the injury could be as serious as it was; I can't say that I blame them.

Despite Ben's shoulder, Bruce Arians did not alter the game plan.

Woodley and Parker Up for NFL Honors

After the first week of the NFL season and a great start from the Pittsburgh Steelers, it comes as no surprise that two players are up for NFL honors.

Outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley is one of five finalists for the Defensive Player of the Week award while running back Willie Parker is one of three finalists for the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week.

Sore Shoulder Will Limit Roethlisberger at Practice Today

During his weekly news conference, Coach Mike Tomlin said that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be limited in practice today due to a minor shoulder problem; nothing serious.

Other players that will be limited along with Ben at today's practice are left tackle Marvel Smith (groin strain) and cornerback Deshea Townsend (heel contusion).

All are expected to play in Sunday night's game against the Cleveland Browns.

Ron Cook Thinks Roethlisberger is Now the #1 QB in the NFL

With all the focus on New England Patriot's quarterback, Tom Brady and his season-ending knee injury, no one has thought of who will now fill his spot as the #1 QB in the NFL - except for Ron Cook, that is.

Cook posted a piece today which talks about placing the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, into that esteemed position and how Roethlisberger could easily have been in Brady's position on Sunday (after taking a hit to the knee from Texans defensive tackle Amobi Okoye towards the end of the first half). The hit looked bad enough to have us all thinking, "oh no" and Cook thinking that the season could be over. However, Ben was back in the second half looking as good as ever and able to lead the Steelers to another touchdown drive that put all our minds at ease.

With the exception of the hit he took from Okoye and 2 others from Texans defensive end Mario Williams, the offensive line looked better than expected but as good as Roethlisberger had said they would be / are. I'm sure I'm not the only one surprised by this fact. Although it felt good to have them prove me (and everyone else) wrong!

"I'm excited for those guys so they can silence the critics who are talking bad about them," Roethlisberger said during training camp. "I have all the faith in the world that they'll protect me."

Cook goes on to say that he's excited to think how good Ben can be if he stays healthy this season and giving reasons as to why he thinks Roethlisberger can easily move into the position of "NFL's brightest star" with Brady out of the picture.

This is definitely a good start to a great season. So great that it could lead us to another Super Bowl Championship? Let's not get ahead of ourselves and take it one game at a time, but if the first game is any indication then there's a good possibility!

Penguins Head Coach Attends Home-Opener

Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Michel Therrien was in attendance at last Sunday's Pittsburgh Steelers home-opener against the Houston Texans. He was a special gues on the field at both the Penn State and Steelers games for pre-game warmups and also attended the Chartiers Valley-Yough High School game.

“It was an amazing experience to watch all these levels of football,” said Therrien, who grew up in Montreal and played hockey and baseball as a youngster. “The fans are so passionate. They really get behind their teams. It’s really great to see.”

“I got a chance to speak with Mike and wish him good luck in person,” Therrien said. “It was an amazing experience to be down on the field before the game, to see all those guys, and it was great to have the Steelers open the season with a big win.”

Brady Injured

[STATUS UPDATE] it's been reported that Brady suffered a knee injury is likely to return.

New England Patriots QB, Tom Brady, limped off the field as he was accompanied to the locker room. Brady was hurt after the Patriots second drive today against the Chiefs.

No word as to the current situation but Matt Cassel is warming up.

[UPDATE] Pittsburgh radio coverage announcer, Ellis Cannon, reported that a blog posted you could "hear a pin drop" in the stadium after the play when Brady got hurt and was holding his knee.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, the reigning NFL MVP, limped off the field in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Brady remained on the turf after he was hit in the left leg by Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard. There was no immediate announcement on his injury or his status.
Brady had completed a 26-yard pass to Randy Moss, who fumbled the ball away when he was tackled.

Tomlin is PUMPED!!

I am LOVIN' Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin's attitude and motivation today!!

It began the minute he led the Steelers onto the field before kickoff and continues as the Steelers stopped the Texans from completing a first down. They cut to video of Tomlin pumping his fist and saying "let's go!" as they headed to a commercial break.

The Steelers should feed off of this (for crying out loud - I'M feeding off of it)!!!

And the ruling that they stopped Houston now stands which is a HUGE motivation factor to the Steelers as well -- this should be a good game!!

Bouchette Dazzles with Football Knowledge

Yesterday on the Steelers Q&A with Ed Bouchette post, Bouchette explained the reasoning behind the 53-man roster (why 53?).

Bouchette explained that it's "arbitrary" and that 53 was just a compromise between the players union and management agreed on since the union wanted more and management wanted less.

He goes on to say that the limit used to be 45 or 47 in the 1980's and that players placed on injured reserve didn't count against the roster (and could return in 6 weeks), so you'd have teams making up injuries to keep players without the risk of another team claiming them.

The league finally put a stop to this by expanding the roster and limiting the number of players who could dress to 45 and gave all teams an even playing field, so to speak.

Steelers Fill Roster Spot with TE Sean McHugh

The Steelers announed that they've signed veteran tight end Sean McHugh to a one-year deal today which makes a total of 3 tight ends on the Pittsburgh team..

McHugh was drafted out of Penn State in the 2004 NFL draft and spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Lions.

Foote Returned to Practice

On Monday, Larry Foote practiced for the first time since hurting his knee in the pre-season game against the Vikings on Saturday, August 23rd. He expects to play on the first regular season game on Sunday, September 7th against the Texans.

"I took that brace off, so it felt good," the starting inside linebacker said Monday after practice. "The next step is with the pounding and see how (my knee) reacts to that. But for the most part, it feels good."

Steelers Trade Mahan

[UPDATE] ESPN ticker reports that the Steelers received a 7th round draft pick for the trade.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced today that they have traded backup center Sean Mahan to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for an undisclosed draft choice in 2009.

During this year's training camp, Mahan competed with Justin Hartwig who was signed by the Steelers as a free agent. Prior to the final pre-season game, Coach Mike Tomlin made Hartwig the starter to which Mahan did not respond well to.

Darnell Stapleton now becomes Hartwig's backup. Stapleton made the team last year as an undrafted rookie from Rutgers.

Today's trade decreases the roster down to 52 players, so the Steelers will be able to add another player prior to Sunday's home opener against the Houston Texans.

Pittsburgh Steelers Captains Named

By a team vote, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected four players as this season's team captains yesterday.

For the first time since playing for the Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger and Jeff Reed were named captains. Roethlisberger will serve as offensive co-captain alongside Hines Ward and Reed will serve as the Steelers special teams captain.

James Farrior was named the team’s defensive captain for the fifth consecutive season.

Big Ben to be Featured in "Fanfare" the Magazine

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's magazine, Fanfare, features Big Ben in the September 2008 issue. Pictured left is Ben Roethlisberger with his 2 dogs Zeus (4-year-old Rottweiler; right) and Hercules (3-year-old Bernes Mountain Dog; left).

The article, "Big Ben's Big Give," focuses on Roethlisberger's charity The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation which donates K-9 police dogs to local police departments.

It was in Roethlisberger's hometown where his foundation took root. In 2006, Flip, the town's K-9 police dog, was shot and killed. Some of the guys on the force, old school buddies of Ben, called with the news. His dad, Ken, suggested that Ben might help.

He did. And he was hooked.

"I've always been a dog person, so it just made sense to do this for my hometown. A couple of months later, my dad asked, 'Wouldn't it be nice to buy a dog for every city that you play in?'"

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has an article today reporting that the Pittsburgh Steelers will be going with Byron Leftwich as their backup QB and keeping Dennis Dixon for their #3 while placing Charile Back on IR with a possibility of using a procedural injury settlement in which he would be available to them if needed later.

Batch has about 4 weeks left of recovery time left and will be healthy enough to begin playing again at that time; however, if they place him on injured reserve, his season would end regardless of whether or not he is healthy enough to play and would have to pay him his full salary of $1,355.000. With having the choice to use a procedural injury settlement, the Steelers could release him and have him available to them in the second half of the season with only having to pay him a part of that salary; however, as a free agent, he could also sign with another team during that time and only be available to the Steelers after mid-season if he didn't sign with another team.

Batch will be a free agent after this year.

Mendenhall to be Featured on NFL Show

The Steelers posted on their webpage today that their rookie running back, Rashard Mendenhall will be one of five rookies featured on "Hey Rookie, Welcome to the NFL," which is scheduled to air on Tuesday, September 2nd at 8 PM on ESPN2 and will be shown again on Thursday, September 4th at 3 PM again on ESPN2.

The cameras follow each selected rookie from draft day to the final cuts for an exclusive inside look at a rookie's journey through this exciting and stressful experience along with his life outside of football for a rare look at a more personal side like what they enjoy doing in their free time - for Mendenhall, that includes playing the saxophone and clarinet.

It looks like money isn't the answer to help Rashard Mendenhall learn how to hold on to the football.

If you're not aware of what I'm referring to, I'll give you a little background information. It started last Monday morning when he arrived for practice at the Steelers' South Side facility and found the following message scribbled onto the grease board in the locker room:

"Take Mendenhall's ball away and get $100 from him. And you get an extra $500 if you bring it to the RB's meeting room."

This message came with a special football given to Mendenhall with another message written on it: "Mendenhall's $100 ball. You get it, you will get paid."

Out of this little rookie "exercise" thought out by his veteran teammate Hines Ward, Mendenhall has lost a total of $200 to veteran safety Tyrone Carter and rookie defensive back Travis Williams.

Did Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin agree with "exercise"? His take is that it's OK as long as it helps the player avoid this mistake in the future.

"Peer pressure is the ultimate motivator," Tomlin said. "The reality is he has to hold onto the ball."

However, it appears that the exercise didn't yet sink into the rookie's playing mindset as he fumbled the ball again last night. Being aware that it's more of a psychological matter more than anything, Tomlin continued to put Mendenhall back in and have him carry the ball several times more. Hopefully, Mendenhall has gotten this little rookie mental block out of his system and is ready to go for the regular season.

Steelers Win Final Pre-Season Game (Thanks, Again, to Reed!)

Again, Steelers Kicker Jeff Reed won the game for them by kicking a 43-yard field goal last night against the Florida Panthers. The final score was 19 - 16.

"That was a good finish to what has been a very good preseason for us," said head coach Mike Tomlin. "We got a lot of things accomplished that we wanted to get accomplished tonight. We felt that it was necessary to get some no-huddle offense) in with our first offense inside stadiums in the preseason. That is a weapon that we like to use offensively, so we needed to get that done. We got a couple of series of that. We wanted the defense to come out and get after the run again and build upon the performance that we had last week. I thought that we did a nice job against the run."

I just read that Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced at his press conference today that Larry Foote (along with Mike Humpal) will not be playing in Thursday's final pre-season game against the Panthers. He is listing QB Ben Roethlisberger as "day-to-day" along with Limas Sweed (who may be limited in practice today); and Ryan Mundy is questionable.

That's all the news I've found so far, but will keep you posted when I find out more today (especially with the injury status of Foote and Big Ben).

Yesterday, the Steelers made a few roster moves placing Daniel Sepulveda on injured / reserved (IR) and cutting wide receiver/return specialist Jeremy Bloom as well as quarterback Mike Potts and defensive lineman Martavius Prince.

The team currently has 77 players (2 more than roster limit of 75 needed by today at 4 PM).

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, wide receiver Marvin Allen does not count against the 75 players since he will be placed on the practice squad as part of the NFL's international player development program.

Foote to Undergo Testing

Larry Foote left during the first quarter of the game on Saturday with a knee injury.

Coach Mike Tomlin said that he does not think the injury is major but Foote will undergo tests to be sure.

KDKA's Jory Rand also mentioned last night that Foote may not take part in the Steelers next pre-season game against the Florida Panthers on Thursday, but will be reporting updates on the story on Monday (today).

Rand also reported that Roethlisberger was seen with an ice pack on his ankle and "severely limping" after the game. I could be wrong, but I don't think there's much to this like every other time Ben looks injured - he likes the attention. He looked fine after his time playing in the game was over and the CBS commentators interviewed him (no signs of pain on his face; although there were some major bunny ears!). Then again, maybe he's trying to get the offensive line more motivated to defend him. It's worth a try!! I'm sure we'll hear more about this today.

Roethlisberger Saddened by Challis' Passing

Steelers quarterback BenRoethlisberger met John Challis on May 16th at a Pittsburgh Penguins playoff game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Challis sat in Mario Lemieux's luxury box and got to meet Roethlisberger and Dan Rooney.

The last time Roethlisberger saw Challis was when Challis was at St. Vincent college to watch the Steelers practice at training camp.

“It was tough seeing John at camp,” Roethlisberger said. “When I saw him at the hockey game, he looked good. At training camp, you could tell he was getting worse.”
“But the one thing about John is that he never lost focus on what his point was and what his mission was. He stayed upbeat no matter what and made a lot of people appreciate what they have and to be thankful for every day. It takes a strong kid and a strong person to be able to do the things he did. Even though he was sick, he always managed to bring a smile to your face. It was great to be able to meet him and know him.”
“My heart goes out to his family,” Roethlisberger added. “Our thoughts and prayers have always been with him.”

2008 Steelers Ladies Night Out

This year's Steelers Ladies Night Out will be held on Wednesday, October 8th at 4 PM -10 PM at Heinz Field. Registration is now open and will be on a "first-come, first served" basis. They are expecting it to sell out quickly.

Farrior a Steeler for Five More Years!

It was just announced that James Farrior, Steelers veteran linebacker, has signed a 5-year extension allowing him to play through the 2012 season.

Good for Farrior - it's been the talk that this is what he wanted (and some speculation that he wouldn't get it) - that's good news for both the Steelers and Farrior!

[UPDATE:] ESPN.com is reporting that "a source confirmed" Farrior's deal is 5 years $18.25 including a $5 million signing bonus!!

Starters Will See More Playing Time on Saturday

Steelers.com has an article posted about the starters to play more in this upcoming pre-season game against the Vikings on Saturday. That comes as no surprise - isn't that what they usually do (the closer and closer it gets to the regular season, we see the starters play more and more - maybe not.)?

Whatever the case, they're ready! They're itching to play just as we are to see them play! Hines Ward says that they prepare like any other game; the difference being that they won't use alot of the gameplay strategies as they would in the regular season - don't want to give that away (unless it's agains the Patriots and then it doesn't matter what you do or don't "give away," they'll see it at some point when they tape your practice / game!!). Preparing as they normally would allows them to be ready and creates a better situation for they guys to avoid getting hurt.

Newly acquire backup QB, Byron Leftwich, feels more ready for this game then the one last Thursday when he was sort of "thrown in" after being signed only a few days which isn't much time to study the playbooks.

“I am feeling more comfortable,” said Leftwich. “I have a better understanding of what we are trying to do offensively. It was a tough situation last week when I only had two days. At the same time it’s getting better."

“I don’t want to say I am fully getting the offense but I am getting the offense to the point where I know where the ball needs to go and what we are trying to do. I am looking forward to it because I have a week to prepare instead of two days. I am anxious and excited to go back out there on Saturday.”

He may think he could get more familiar with the offense and he's probably right, but I'm surely feeling comfortable with him as our #2 guy - I like him all around!

John Challis Leaves Behind Lasting Memory

John Challis' two-year battle with liver and lung cancer ended yesterday afternoon. The amount of support that has been shown to John and his family over the past few months speaks volumes about the young man and the amount of people he touched throughout his short life of 18 years.

Just as Challis' message spread throughout the country, so too has the word of his passing and all media venues have decided to pay tribute. The blogosphere is no exception, so I feel compelled to join my fellow bloggers in extending my deepest sympathies to the Challis family. With as many lives as John has touched, I'm certain that his memory will live on and continue to help make this world a better place.

The Wait is Over - Polamalu Participates in Practice

Speculation ended yesterday as Troy Polamalu participated in his first practice since being placed on the PUPS list prior to Steelers training camp because of a hamstring injury (the Steelers first practice back home at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex).

Coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that they are waiting to see how Polamalu feels on Wednesday (today) and the days leading up to their next pre-season game against the Vikings on Saturday to decide whether or not he will play.

“It felt good. I think it felt fine,” said Polamalu of his first practice. “It’s nice to get out there and put the pads on and really feel like a part of the team.”

Team members could also tell the difference made by his presence on the practice field.

“Just his presence is amazing,” said cornerback Deshea Townsend. “The main thing for our defense is having another playmaker out there. The more playmakers you can put on the field the better for your defense.

You Need an Agent for That?!

I came across an interesting article by Mike Florio about Daunte Culpepper posted on SportingNews.com. It suggests that Culpepper needs an agent for his non-existent career to go better.

This article peeked my interest because of the recent dealings the Steelers have had with the veteran quarterback and his willingness to continue sitting out rather than being paid to be the #2 man (something I just couldn't understand from the get-go). You mean to tell me that sitting at home doing nothing and getting paid zilch is much more appealing than standing on the sidelines of an NFL team doing nothing AND GETTING PAID just because you want a chance to compete for a starting position? This may make sense for another player in another situation, but for a veteran whose career doesn't seem to be going anywhere, it's simply stupid, especially considering that the Steelers franchise quarterback already signed a $100 million contract!

Although I may agree on a few points made by this article, my opinion is that Culpepper doesn't need an agent to help him acquire a job in the NFL, he needs a shrink or perhaps a trusted friend to sit him down and slap him silly with the truth!

Teams haven't had any interest in Culpepper since the end of the 2007 season, but he hasn't been too wise in his decisions either - he hasn't turned down just one offer, but two. First, the Packers offered him a $1 million deal in April and then the Steelers were in a position to offer him 1 year at $730,000. He wasn't interested because he wanted a guarantee he would be on the roster for a chance to compete with Ben Roethlisberger for the starting position - like that's going to happen! It's almost like "Deal or No Deal" at this point! The more offers he turns down and the more he chooses the $0.01 cases (sitting at home getting paid nothing), the more the offers from that anonymous man up in that booth keep getting lower. He doesn't see a pattern here (or maybe he just doesn't watch that gameshow)?

Now it's been a story of "too little, too late." The article goes on to report that Culpepper may have finally caught on to the fact that he's ridiculously holding out for "something better" since he more recently told USA Today:
"I initially hoped to have an opportunity to start. I am now looking for any team that will give me an opportunity to contribute wherever I am needed."
Sorry, you used all of your life-lines and disparity isn't appealing to anyone let alone an NFL team! Can he buy a vowel - oh wait, that's another gameshow and it wouldn't help in this situation. Maybe Culpepper should be watching more TV in his spare time or give me a call -- I'd be willing to give up my day job to be paid to tell him to wise up, wouldn't you?!

Polamalu Could Return Tuesday

Sunday was the last day for training camp and the Steelers will return to the South Side complex to start practicing again on Tuesday.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting the possibility that Troy Polamalu will be taken off the PUPS list to participate in the practice on Tuesday and perhaps play against the Vikings on Saturday.

"Troy had a nice day running today," coach Mike Tomlin said after practice yesterday. "We'll run him again tomorrow. Hopefully ... we'll get him out there to practice on Tuesday."

Steelers Sign a Familiar Face

Sunday, the Steelers signed defensive end Orpheus Roye.

Pittsburgh originally drafted Roye as a 6th round pick in 1996 played with them until he was signed by the Cleveland Browns as an unrestricted free agent in 2000. He was released earlier this year.

"He is a veteran defensive lineman, a guy who knows how to play the game," said head coach Mike Tomlin. "He is a professional. We will see what he is capable of doing and work him out. He had a very solid workout and seems to be in pretty good shape, so we will continue on him the next couple of weeks and see if he can find a seat on the bus, if you will."

"I know I can help," said Roye. "I have been around for a while. I was used to this defense. It will take me a while to get back, but I think I can contribute."

Already having the advantage of playing under Dick LeBeau and John Mitchell will definitely be a plus for Roye (and the Steelers).

"The defense looks pretty much the same," said Roye. "Everything is still good. You have to come out here and work. I am coming to a good defense. I have to come here and help them win. I have to find my role and do what I can to help the team win."

Surgery Performed to Insert Plate in Batch's Clavicle

As most of you are already aware, Steelers back-up quarterback, Charlie Batch, broke his right collarbone on a miscommunicated play in last Friday's pre-season opener against the Eagles. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Batch underwent surgery yesterday to repair the damage and insert a plate in his clavicle, and is expected to be out six weeks. If Batch elected not to have the surgery, the recovery period would've been 10 - 12 weeks and would've likely been placed on the injured reserve list.

"That would have been the option," Batch said. "And I didn't want to do that, not at all." Because he is a quarterback who relies on a throwing motion, Batch said a plate will be inserted to ensure his collarbone would remain the same length and would not "shorten" from scar-tissue buildup that occurs during a non-surgical recovery period.
"This is the best way to go about it and the fastest way," Batch said.

Culpepper Not Willing to Accept Back-Up Role

Even though both Byron Leftwich and Daunte Culpepper visited the Steelers training camp today and the Steelers were interested in signing them both in order to create a competition - the quarterback who wasn't the best fit would be released or traded at the end of pre-season - Culpepper was not willing to do that without a guarantee.

TIOPS is reporting that both quarterbacks were offered a contract by Pittsburgh, but Culpepper was not willing to sign with the Steelers without being guaranteed a roster spot. An ESPN.com article also reports that "Culpepper was hoping for a chance to compete for a starting job."

Leftwich understands and is comfortable with his role on the team.

"You've got no chance when you've got (No.) 7 here. Only a fool would come here and believe that (in) Week 1, he's going to be the starter," said Leftwich,the seventh overall draft pick in 2003 who passed for 9,042 yards, 51 touchdowns and 36 interceptions and was 24-20 as a starter in Jacksonville. "Ben's a (heck)of a quarterback, and I understand that."
"It's different because you're not the guy. We all know who the guy is here. My job is to prepare myself every day just in case I'm needed," said Leftwich.

I was anxious to see where these 2 quarterbacks would lead. I was most excited to know that the team would have a chance to sign 1, if not 2, veterans even though I wasn't familiar with them as players (only by name). Hearing from Leftwich today made me feel certain he's definitely the right man for the job and that he is smart enough to know where he fits in on the team. As I told my husband today, it's better to be paid to do "nothing" then to do nothing and not get paid. Leftwich realizes that it's an opportunity whereas Culpepper isn't yet willing to get paid to do "nothing" because his ego, pride, whatever you want to call it, is getting in the way!

Hampton Off PUPS List

Casey Hampton participated in practice yesterday at Steelers training camp for the first time since he was placed on the PUPS list.

Hampton has been working with conditioning assistant Marcel Pastoor to get his weight down. TIOPS is saying that Hampton is down to 340 pounds (he is listed as 325); however, it's not yet known if he will play in the next pre-season game on Thursday night against the Buffalo Bills.

The Steelers have officially announced their signing veteran quarterback Bryan Leftwich and 13-year punter Mitch Berger to one-year deals.

Daunte Culpepper is still also "in the mix." Both Culpepper and Byron Leftwich participated in the morning workout today.

Following the workout, the Steelers went to work with the agents for both players, and it was shortly after the team’s only practice of the day at SaintVincent College that Coach Mike Tomlin announced Leftwich had signed.
“We made an agreement with Byron Leftwich to sign and be a quarterback with the Pittsburgh Steelers,” said Tomlin. “We have some familiarity there, because Ken Anderson, our quarterbacks coach, worked with him down in Jacksonville.”

To add Leftwich and Berger to the roster, Pittsburgh cut lineback Anthony Trucks and wide receiver Gerran Walker.

Charlie Batch's injury during the 2nd quarter of Friday's preseason game leaves the Steelers in somewhat of a bind.

Coach Mike Tomlin said they look to sign another veteran quarterback. Among those fitting the veteran criteria and currently available are Daunte Culpepper and Byron Leftwich.

There are several sites reporting that the Steelers HAVE signed BOTH Culpepper and Leftwich! ProFootballTalk.com (PFT) and TIOPS say their sources have told them the team will add two veteran quarterbacks. TIOPS is saying that Mike Potts will be released and Culpepper will be at camp today and the speculation for signing both quarterbacks is said to be because Charlie Batch's injury is more serious than originally thought and will be out longer than anticipated - perhaps for the season.

My husband feels that the Steelers are more likely to keep Culpepper rather than Leftwich for the simple reason that Culpepper played for the Vikings -- the team Tomlin was previous a Defensive Coordinator for.

Steelers #2 quarterback, Charlie Batch, was hurt in yesterday's pre-season opener. Speculation was confirmed later during the game when announcers reported he suffered a broken collar bone. Early reports say he'll be out for 4 - 6 weeks (some have extended it to 8 weeks).

It looks likely that the Steelers will be in the market for another quarterback. The name Brian St. Pierre has been brought up more than once. He signed with the Arizona Cardinal in the off-season which would mean Steelers would have to make a trade if Ken Whisenhunt is willing to part with him (perhaps he would see a former Steeler for another Steeler as a fair trade).

ROETHLISBERGER Will Start Friday

Coach Mike Tomlin said that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will start in the team's first pre-season game tonight, but that it will not be for more than a series.

Tomlin said that he will use all four quarterbacks in the pre-season opener with each of the rookie quarterbacks Dennis Dixon and Mike Potts heading in after veteran Charlie Batch.

Roethlisberger's participation in practice over the past four days was limited due to a groin injury that Tomlin said was precautionary.

Troy Polomalu and Casey Hampton remain on the PUPS list and will not play in tonight's game. Other players who are ruled out for the game are Anthony Smith and Cody Boyd.

Sepulveda Has Surgery

Yesterday at practice, Steelers safety Anthony Smith delivered a hard blow to Ward who was slow to get up after he hit the ground. This wasn't the first time that Ward has been upset with Smith over hard hits. Last year at camp Ward was anything but happy about Smith plowing over wide receiver Willie Reid and again at one of last week's practice, Reid was the target of one of Smith's blows. However, this WAS the first time that Ward was on the receiving end of one of Smith's hits!

When asked about it, the permanent smile typically on Ward's face was no where to be found.

"There's not much to say ... he hit me," Ward said. "You saw what happened.
You guys saw it. There's really nothing for me to say."
"I'm not going to comment about it," Ward said. "I've been hit before."
"I normally don't get hit like that during the preseason till preseason games," Ward said. "It is what it is. I'm not going to harp about it."

And they say Sidney Crosby whines!

Unnecessary Roughness? Maybe. Hines Ward's gripe legitimate? Perhaps. But let's just keep it on the field and out of the media and everyone's view.

Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr. was at St. Vincent College at the Fred Rogers Center attending a forum on chilhood issues on Monday. Afterwards, he spent some time visiting with the Rooney's.

So, of course, he was going to make a pit-stop at the Steelers training camp while there. He even caught a few from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger prior to the Steeler's practice on Monday.

“It’s a great honor to be here with Ben and also the Rooney family,” said Casey. “I have known them a long time and they have been great friends.”

“My father would have killed to have done this,” said Casey. “He was a big Steelers fan like we all are. My daughters won’t believe this. I need pictures to prove it."

Kemoeatu Returned to Training on Monday

Steelers.com reports that Chris Kemoeatu returned on Monday after spending the first week of training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

He injured his left elbow back home in Hawaii while preparing for training camp when he was running steps with his brother. Kemoeatu tripped on a step and landed on his elbow, causing the injury.

“I tried to catch myself and landed on the elbow,” said Kemoeatu. “It’s not sore right now, until I put a lot of pressure on it.”

Kemoeatu wore a brace to protect it in practice on Monday and will continue to wear it for the next few weeks. Kemoeatu is currently one of the players in a battle to replace Alan Faneca at left guard, so he has to make up for the days he lost.
“You know, this guy is a guy that likes to work,” said Tomlin. “He is very prepared. He had a nice offseason. He came in here in great condition. We went out and worked and it’s great to have him back.”
“How many days have we been here? That is how far he is behind,” said Tomlin. “But he is a professional and I’m sure he will catch up relatively quickly.”

Yesterday during a break in training camp, Stan Savran presented Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin with his very own authentic Penguins jersey sporting his name and the number 1 on the back! It was a true authentic jersey with the label of authenticity sewn inside by Dana Heinze, the Pittsburgh Penguins Equipment Manager who also happens to be from Johnstown, PA (my hometown) and a HUGE Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Tomlin was spotted at numerous Penguins games last season along with Kevin Colbert and he told Stan that he loves to attend the game with "his boys."

I think Stan was expecting the coach to put the jersey on but Coach Tomlin elected not to do so!

I wonder if Kevin Colbert is asking where HIS jersey is (do you think he would settle for #2?!)!

BETTIS and LOGAN Added to New 1250 ESPN Lineup

The 1250 ESPN sports radio station is revamping their lineups due to the need for filling in the space that was left when Mark Madden was fired back in May. The new lineups were announced today on the 1250 ESPN webpage and start on August 4th.

Also announced was the addition of Jerome Bettis to their full-time staff. Beginning on August 29th, Bettis will join the afternoon lineup LIVE from his restaurant Jerome Bettis' 36 Grille on the North Shore every Friday from 5:30 - 6:30! In addition to Bettis, another former Pittsburgh Steeler will join the ESPN airwaves - Mike Logan.

Sounds like an exciting lineup to me!!

Steelers Throwback Uniforms

The Steelers will once again sport their throwback uniforms this season, wearing them for the September 29 game against Baltimore and October 26 game vs. the New York Giants, both at Heinz Field.

The jerseys were popular with players and fans alike, and many can be seen dotting the hillsides at St. Vincent College during the team’s training camp.

They were originally worn as a part of the team’s 75th Season Celebration last year.

WARD: Brightest Offensive Player

Add "Smartest Non-Quarterback Offensive Player in the NFL" to the list of awards / achievements Hines Ward has earned.

ESPN.com recently conducted a survey among head coaches which asked them to choose the player they felt was the smartest offensively (and were unable to choose players from their own team).

"You wonder once in a while what the coaches think of you, and this is really a nice honor," Ward said of the results.
Said one AFC coach: "Hines has been one of the smartest players in the league for a long time. He just has a knack for the game."

There's a reason for his high football IQ. He earned it at the University of Georgia where he learned to play nearly every offensive position on the field - quarterback, wide receiver, tailback, and even punt returner!

"I had to know what was going on with the offense because I did everything in college," the 32-year-old receiver said. "So being a smart player was sort of necessary. I had no choice. … When I came to the NFL, I think I knew the basics of everything and the transition was fast. Sure, the NFL is much more complicated, but I was able to adjust pretty well."

Also noteworthy, Dan Rooney was voted as the league's best owner by the coaches.

"Everything permeates from the top down," Tomlin said. "I don't care what you talk about, whether it's a football team or a business. Our owners'reputation is well-deserved. They're awesome people. They're football people. It's one of the things that's better than you even anticipate."

Sepulveda OUT for Season!

[UPDATE] Savran on Sportsbeat had coverage of Coach Tomlin announcing to the media that Sepulveda IS out for the season; this is a big loss!

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting that the Steelers punter, Daniel Sepulveda, injured his right knee Monday during practice.

Coach Tomlin said that Sepulveda underwent an MRI which revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his knee. He will likely be out for the season (although nothing in the article confirms this or isn't something that Tomlin was credited with / quoted as saying).

"My knee has been shaky for a while," Sepulveda said, adding that it didn't feel right while warming up Monday.

In light of the punter's injury, the Steelers claimed Paul Edinger off waivers from the Detroit Lions. He is expected to arrive at training camp sometime this evening.

"It's unfortunate for Daniel on a personal level, but it's part of football," Tomlin said. "That's what this game is about. We have to prepare to move forward, and we'll do that."

It sure does sound like he's out for the year especially with their claiming another punter, but no direct statement to that effect has been made so I will remain on the safe side until it is confirmed.

Training Camp - DAY 1

TIOPS is reporting that Kendall Simmons, Max Starks and Willie Colon arrived at camp in great shape. Starks also excelled in the conditioning run yesterday, and all of this does not surprise me since that was the first thought that came to mind when I saw a picture of him arriving at camp (below). That's good to hear / see especially in light of the recent Casey Hampton drama! They probably realize that they'll be competing for their positions.

Speaking of Hampton and competing for postitions, when Ron Cook asked a few of the players to speak on what they thought regarding the Hampton PUP list situation, all of them basically felt the same way -- they realize Coach Tomlin was sending a message and they heard it loud and clear!

"Doing this to a player of Casey's stature sends a message to everyone else -- nobody is safe," defensive captain James Farrior said.
"It doesn't surprise me with Tomlin. It doesn't matter who you are with him. You have to perform," veteran wide receiver Hines Ward added.
"It's unfortunate he came in like this, but I'm not worried about him being ready for the season," Farrior said. "He always gets himself ready ... "We need him, I know that. He's our anchor."

Not to mention the fact that this isn't the first time that Hampton has showed up to camp less that ready to perform. Last year, the same situation occurred but being it was Tomlin's first training camp, he let it slide. This year, he isn't so quick to let it slide and takes the matter very seriously.

That's why Tomlin sees nothing funny about Hampton's weight problem. The guess here is it disappoints him to no end and also ticks him off because Hampton has let the team down, although he didn't say that. What he did say flatly when asked if he was concerned that Hampton wouldn't be ready for the season was this: "Yes, I am." [Ron Cook - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette]

Said Hampton, "I know I need to be in better shape. I know what I have to do. Bottom line, come Sept. 7, I'll be ready to play."

Let's hope so!

Hampton Among 3 on Steelers PUP List

Casey Hampton, Troy Polamalu, and Chris Kemoeautu are all starting camp on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list and will not be particpating in the 2 practices scheduled for Monday.

Although Polamalu and Kemoeautu have been placed on the list because they currently have minor injuries, Hampton is on the list because he was unable to complete the conditioning run test held yesterday afternoon. "He wasn't able to finish the test," Tomlin said. "He's overweight and he's not conditioned enough to participate at this point," and Tomlin did not appear very happy about it. Hampton will not be taken off the PUP list until he gets in better shape.

Polamalu has a mild hamstring pull while Kemoeautu is nursing weakness in one of his triceps. TIOPS reported that "sources" say Polamalu is "day-to-day" and should be able to practice Tuesday or Wednesday.

There are alot of uncertainties going into this year's camp and there will be alot of players competing for roster spots.

"There will be a lot of issues, and that is what training camp is about. I think one of the things that I am always conscious about is that I never try to tell a story; I always try to let the story unfold and call it as I see it. That is what I intend to do this year as well."

This evening my husband was searching for songs to download on his new mp3 player. His main goal was to find game songs -- you know, those songs that pump you up for the game?! We compiled a list of Pens songs and Steelers songs over the course of several years of going to games and he's been downloading most of the night. One of the songs wasn't one we had talked about, but I was familiar with by the Charlie Daniels Band called "In America." It was written in the 80's and is about the Iranian Hostage Crisis and America's patriotism. The song features the following line:

You just go and lay your hand
On a Pittsburgh Steelers' fan
And I think you're gonna finally understand

My husband was curious as to how it came to be in the song, so he did a little more research on the song and found this on Songfacts.com which I think is really interesting so I thought I'd share it with you (part of a Q&A on the Charlie Daniels Band webpage):

TAYLOR Agrees to Restructure Contract

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported today that cornerback Ike Taylor agreed to restructure his contract on Friday in order for the Pittsburgh Steelers to make more space under the salary cap to sign top draft pick.

In 2006, Taylor signed an extension with the Steelers for 5-years at $23.75 million. Taylor's contract restructure reduces this year's salary to $1 million and gives him a $3 million signing bonus ($1 million over the next 3 years). This enables the Steelers to free up $2 million under the salary cap.

Taylor joins other Steelers who have restructured their contract - Hines Ward, James Farrior, and former Steeler Alan Faneca.

Steelers Officially Sign MENDENHALL

The Official Pittsburgh Steelers webpage is announcing that they have signed their first-round draft pick Rashard Mendenhall today. They report that this is the fourth consecutive year that they've signed their first-round draft pick prior to the opening of training camp.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that the Steelers have also signed their second-round draft pick Limas Sweed to a 4-year deal; and that Mendenhall signed to a 5-year deal.
"Mendenhall will sign for five years at $12.55 million. He will receive bonuses as part of that contract worth $6.83 million. Contract terms for Sweed were not immediately available."

"Aunt Rita" - Least Known Owner of the Steelers!

Most of you may not know (I sure didn't until this article in today's Pittsburgh Tribune-Review), that the Rooney's aren't the sole owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to the PTR, Rita McGinley has owned 10% of the team since the 1940's when her father, Barney, got together with the late Art Rooney, Sr. to buy back the franchise. With her nephew's controlling part of the team, the McGinley family actually owns 20% of the team altogether. While the Rooney's own / control the remaining 80%.

After learning that "Aunt Rita" part ownership in the Steelers, it may be hard to believe that she has not ever attended a Steelers training camp, but if she ever does she would like to meet Big Ben!

Ownership Issues Could "Potentially" Affect Players

Mike Tomlin addressed the media yesterday at the first news conference of the 2008-2009 season.

Tomlin acknowledged that the uncertainty of Steelers ownership could "potentially" be a distraction for the players when reporting to training camp on Sunday. The following was taken from an article featured in the PPG today:

"Because there'll be questions that I'll have to answer in regards to that and there will be questions that potentially our team has to answer in regard to that.
"I don't have the answer to those questions and neither does our football team; I'm here to coach; they're here to play. Those questions will be answered by the Rooneys.''
Mr. Tomlin did say that a "good" team won't let ownership issues or other off-field subjects become distractions.
"You got a good football team when they're capable of doing that," he said, "and not only on that specific subject, but on any subject that has nothing to do with playing football and preparing yourself to win football games.''

Upcoming Signings and Extension Talks

TIOPS has reported that the Steelers have had talks with Bryant McFadden regarding a long-term extension and began preliminary discussions with Marvel Smith regarding a 3-year extension.

They also believe that a deal for Limas Sweed with be announced in the next couple of days and that Rashard Mendenhall is waiting to see what Felix Jones (Dallas running back) signs for. Speculation is that he will be signed before training camp begins.

At yesterday's news conference with Mike Tomlin, he again advised the media of Kevin Colbert's prediction that "both unsigned rookies, running back Rashard Mendenhall and wide receiver Limas Sweed, will have contracts by Sunday. Once both sign, one player must be removed from the roster to pair it to 81, which includes the international roster exemption, England's Marvin Allen, a wide receiver." [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette]
